The pieces bruised, torn, and taken. Little by little starting to feel like 3/4 a person, 1/2 a person, a 1/4 of a person. But that’s not true, or at least I see it as only half the story. Why don’t we ever talk about the pieces added to us that end up making us who we are? Yes, there are pieces lost that will never return, but there are also pieces given that we get to keep forever. We are the sum of the people imprinted on us. I’ve felt grief over losing pieces of myself, and guilt in the pieces of myself that I associate with other people, but I’ve slowly come to realize that there’s so much freedom in accepting reality and joy in having gratitude for what I’ve received along the way. These are the pieces of us.
